
Using the idea of “Flow State” regarding learning
Kids today are being brought up fully immersed in digital environments. It is growing to be more normalized that kids can work their way around a T.V remote or iPad, before they can read a novel or a collection of short stories on their own. Rather than fighting against the current of a technological world, literacy education can use its greatest threat as its ultimate asset.
Here at Lumen, we have recognized the potential that video games have. We’re asking,
“What if we utilized the media that children are most conferrable with, to strengthen their skills?”
As a team, we have designed a video game that engages users with its fun pixelated design and immersive galactic sagas to help them grasp reading and comprehension skills.
Video games are incredible learning tools. When a child is working to unlock a new level, obtain better gear, or progress through a storyline, their motivation shifts. Instead of completing a task because it was assigned, they are driven by curiosity and achievement. They want to know what happens next. That motivation naturally increases the amount of attention they are willing to give to the task in front of them.
The science behind the design: Incorporating flow theory
The foundation of this design is based on psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of flow. Flow describes a cognitive state in which an individual is fully immersed in an activity—focused, motivated, and operating at peak engagement.
Flow state occurs when three key conditions are met:
- The challenge level matches the learner’s current skill level
- The goals are clear
- Feedback is immediate
If a task is too easy, it leads to boredom. If it is too difficult, frustration sets in. When properly balanced, learners enter a productive state where effort feels rewarding.
Video games are one of the most reliable systems for producing flow. They are designed to:
- Gradually increase in difficulty
- Provide instant correction and reinforcement
- Break complex goals into achievable steps
- Encourage persistence after failure
In educational settings, this balance is often difficult to maintain. Classrooms must serve diverse skill levels simultaneously. A well-designed literacy game, however, can adapt in real time to the users’ needs and existing skill set.

The design of Lumen’s literacy game intentionally mirrors strong instructional practices. Instead of presenting reading exercises in isolation, they are woven into the mechanics of the game.
For example, early levels focus on phonetic recognition and decoding. Players might encounter fragments of a mysterious alien alphabet that must be interpreted correctly to open a door or activate a device. These tasks reinforce phonics while still feeling like part of the adventure.
As players advance, the complexity of the text increases. Later stages introduce longer passages, narrative clues, and vocabulary challenges that require deeper comprehension. Players may need to read a short story found in an archive and determine which character is trustworthy in order to progress.
This layered structure allows the game to gradually build literacy skills while maintaining the player’s sense of progression. Every reading task serves a purpose within the story world.
Additionally, the game provides instant feedback, one of the most powerful elements of effective learning. If a player misunderstands a passage or selects an incorrect interpretation, the system immediately provides correction and allows them to try again.
